Rock Harbor Sunset
Sunset at Rock Harbor. Photo taken on June 21, 2023 in Orleans, MA.
THE STORY
Orleans, MA is one of the only places on the East Coast where you can see the sun set over the ocean. I make it a tradition to try and see the sunset at least once a year. At low tide, the tidal flats can be walked for miles. Every now and then as you're wading through the water you'll bump into a comb jelly, also knowns as a ctenophore. These little, round, gelatinous blobs cannot sting, as they are not true jellies. Fascinating creatures nonetheless, their soft squishy bodies are perfectly adapted to their environment. Using cilia structures in their mouths, they munch on the bodies of larger comb jellies, and in times of food shortage, they will shrink in size to conserve energy, and pause other regulated processes like reproduction and growth. If you look at them closely, you can see the iridescent combs of plates that beat through their body to move through the water. There are also hermit crabs scuttling around the sand. Hermit crabs, unlike most other crabs, have little corkscrew bodies that they can twist around the inside of a shell to call the shell its home. Because hermit crabs use empty shells as their home, it is best to leave all shells on the beach, the abundance of shells determines the survivability of the crabs.

INTERNATIONAL CUSTOMERS: Etsy does not allow multiple shipping profiles based on variations. Therefore, if you are an international customer and you do not agree with the cost of shipping, please email me prior to purchase. I am more than happy to work with you to get an accurate quote from the photo lab for the cost of shipping.

Please note: Each item is made to order so the processing time is approximately one week because I get my photos printed from a professional lab. Because of this, I do not accept returns unless they arrive damaged or have an obvious factory fault. If this is the case, please contact me at your earliest convenience.
The color on your monitor may vary slightly than the actual printed result.

PHOTOGRAPHER BIO:
Not at all a full-time photographer, I just recently finished my Master’s Degree focusing in Ecology, Behavior, and Evolution. I’m also in a veterinary technician program in order to become a wildlife and zoo veterinary technician.
I’ve always had a passion for animals, the outdoors, and photography. I do my best to capture images that make you feel as though you’re actually there. While digital photos often are beautiful, in the frequent words of my mother, “Can we look at it on a large screen? I can hardly see it on your phone,” I’m taking her suggestion one step further. Imagine looking at the photo on your wall. Imagine being able to see the detail one step shorter than actually being there. That’s my goal.
I hope you enjoy experiencing the natural world through my eyes and immersing yourself in my adventures.
